LOCATION: Kamakwie/Tambakha, Sierra Leone

The Role:

Street Child is seeking applications for an exciting voluntary position based in Kamakwie, a small town in the North of Sierra Leone, as part of the charity’s Street Child Ambassadors programme.

This role will focus on supporting the implementation and monitoring of Street Child’s largest rural schools project. Since 2010, Street Child has enabled over 6,000 children to access education in the remote rural chiefdom of Tambakha by working in partnership with communities to construct simple school structures, train teachers, establish school income generating initiatives, and conduct advocacy on the importance of education.

Working alongside the Project Coordinator, Community Animators and Teaching Specialists, key responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting regular monitoring visits to over 50 Street Child supported schools in the remote villages of Tambakha
  • Supporting the Project Co-ordinator to gather and compile data for project reporting
  • Where necessary, providing basic computer training (email, excel, word)
  • Supporting the Teaching Specialists in their teacher mentoring work, including documenting the outcomes of teacher appraisals
  • Working with the Community Animators on advocacy work engaging parents and other stakeholders on the importance of education
  • Assisting with the distribution of teaching and learning materials, or other forms of school support

The Ideal Candidate Would Possess the Following Attributes:

  • Strong academic credentials.
  • Excellent written and communication skills.
  • Hard working, pro-active and professional work ethic.
  • Some experience or ambitions in event organisation, coordination and fundraising.
  • Keen to gain experience working in Africa and immersed in local culture.
  • Independent and able to make decisions with little guidance.

The Terms:

The successful applicant must be prepared to live in very basic conditions and to travel independently around the country. Food, accommodation and flights are at the applicant’s own expense. A more detailed breakdown of costs and expenses will be provided for those applicants selected for interview. A fundraising commitment is also required.

How to apply:

Please send a CV and cover letter to evi@street-child.co.uk

The Charity:

Twelve years after its brutal civil war, Sierra Leone remains one of the poorest countries in the world.  While this small and beautiful West African country is now at peace, our own research indicates that there are around 50,000 children relying upon the streets of Sierra Leone for their survival; since the Ebola crisis took hold of the region, our research shows that a further 15,000 children have been orphaned by Ebola. We aim to help them all.

Street Child is a volunteer-led charity that works with street kids, out of school children and, more recently, those affected by Ebola.  Where necessary, we work towards reunifying children with their families but the ultimate goal for all of our projects is to help empower vulnerable children through sustainable access to education.
