COMMITMENT:  2 weeks

LOCATION: Rural Areas in Sierra Leone

The Role:

Street Child is currently looking for qualified Primary or Secondary teachers to support the development of local teachers and help develop their skills. Successful candidates will travel to Sierra Leone over the school summer holidays for two weeks to help run workshops as well as working directly alongside our Sierra Leonean teachers. A key aspect of this programme will be to collaborate with local teachers in designing and delivering effective lesson plans with clear learning objectives within an environment where resources are incredibly limited.

Whilst in Sierra Leone you will be situated in a rural area so amenities will be extremely basic; so this is not an experience for the faint-hearted. However, it is a great opportunity to be involved in important development work within Sierra Leone, share experiences, skills and resources with teachers from both the UK and Sierra Leone… not to mention the chance to visit some of the country’s incredible beaches.

The Ideal Candidate Would Possess the Following Attributes:

  • Strong academic credentials, preferably with experience within the education field
  • Excellent written and communication skills
  • Hard working, pro-active and professional work ethic
  • Respectful of cultural differences
  • Keen to gain experience working in Africa and be immersed in local culture
  • Independent and able to make decisions with little guidance
  • Ability to work well with others in cross-cultural circumstances

The Terms:

This is a self-funded programme and a more detailed breakdown of costs and expenses will be provided for those teachers who are selected for interview. A fundraising commitment is also required. For more information and to apply, please email via the link below.

How to apply:

Send a CV and cover letter to eu-ambassadors@street-child.co.uk.

If you are not a teacher, but you are interested in education, we would still love to hear from you. We are flexible and can offer positions for people coming from other backgrounds.

The Charity:

Twelve years after its brutal civil war, Sierra Leone remains one of the poorest countries in the world. While this small and beautiful West African country is now at peace, our own research indicates that there are still around 50,000 children relying upon the streets of Sierra Leone for their survival. Street Child is a volunteer-led charity that works with street kids, out of school children and, more recently, those affected by Ebola.  Where necessary, we work towards reunifying children with their families but the ultimate goal for all of our projects is to help empower vulnerable children through sustainable access to education.

We work with communities to create temporary and permanent school structures and identify skilled community members to attend a national teacher training programme, enabling them to teach directly within their own community. Within three years, we aim to offer children that would previously have had no opportunity to go to school the chance to gain a national standard of education. Despite hard work, motivation and enthusiasm, many of the teachers that Street Child supports are in need of assistance to develop key skills and improve their ability to deliver effective lessons. This is where EU teachers can help.
