Volunteer Internship: Sierra Leone Marathon Ambassador- Event Director
OUTLINE DATES (negotiable): 10-12 weeks between March and June 2016
LOCATION: Sierra Leone

The Charity

Street Child is a charity working in West Africa that is dedicated to empowering some of the most vulnerable children in the world by giving them the chance to go to school and giving their families the sustainable means to keep them there. At Street Child, we are very proud of our volunteer-based approach, keeping overheads low so that as much funding as possible can go to our projects in West Africa.

Ebola Orphans

One of the main focuses for Street Child is supporting children who have been orphaned through this crisis. They are often abandoned, stigmatised and alone, supporting younger siblings. Their belongings burnt to stop the virus spreading they have nothing. We have so far supported approximately 14,000 orphans across Sierra Leone and Liberia, providing short-term emergency care and long-term sustainable support.

Sierra Leone Marathon 2016 (SLM16)

The Sierra Leone Marathon is the charity’s flagship event, having raised over half a million pounds to support children in Sierra Leone.  On Sunday 29th May 2016 we will host the fifth annual Sierra Leone Marathon and we aim to make this by far our most successful fundraising event to date. After a devastating year, we really need to make this year’s event more successful than ever before.

The Role: Sierra Leone Marathon Ambassador

We are looking for an Ambassador to work mainly in Sierra Leone leading up to and during the SLM16

The Ambassador will work closely with the Race Director and Street Child staff to plan and coordinate the SLM16 wider event activities, with a focus on the non-race elements of the overall event including participant in-country accommodation, transportation, catering and excursions.

An internship with the Sierra Leone Marathon is guaranteed to be busy and varied and this is a great opportunity to offer real value to a team whilst gaining valuable experience in project management, event planning and international development.  Equally you will have the opportunity to shape your own experience according to your skills, knowledge and goals.

 Key responsibilities:

  •  Planning and management of all event logistics including runner/ staff/ volunteer accommodation, transport, airport transfers and catering
  • Arranging visits to Street Child projects with local staff members
  • Coordinating with Street Child and SLM staff both in UK and Sierra Leone
  • Assisting in event procurement.
  • Proactively supporting the recruitment international and local participants.

Person specification:
Essential

  • Highly self-motivated and pro-active, with the ability to work as part of a team;
  • Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to plan and implement plans in a structured manner
  • Excellent communication skills, fluent English, both oral and written
  • Independent and able to make decisions with little guidance;
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle last minute changes;
  • An ability to be flexible and to work outside of your specific duties when needed, have fun and laugh along with a sometimes unpredictable environment!
  • An interest in Africa, international affairs and/or international development would be of benefit.

The Terms:

The successful applicant must be prepared to live in very basic conditions and to travel independently around Sierra Leone. Food, accommodation and flights are at the applicant’s own expense. A more detailed breakdown of costs and expenses will be provided for those applicants selected for interview. A fundraising commitment is also required.

Whilst this is initially a voluntary role, for applicants with relevant experience able to prove their ability to add strategic value, there is the distinct possibility of attaining a more permanent position: almost all the charity’s paid staff began as interns or on a pro bono basis.

How to Apply?
