The Linux System Administrator.

The Linux System Administrator will design systems and architectures that include software, hardware and communications solutions to support the total requirements as well as provide for present and future cross-functional requirements and interfaces. As a Linux System Administrator you will work with collaborative teams to ensure client technologies are functioning as efficiently as possible. You will be responsible for installing, operating and maintaining a heterogeneous environment consisting of servers running Linux, VMware and Windows. The servers are used to host web applications, and include Apache, Tomcat, Oracle, and MySQL. Network devices include routers, firewalls, switches, load balancers, and network attached storage.  A full suite of compliant security and management applications are also included.

As a Linux System Administrator you shall ensure architectures are in compliance with open systems standards as they apply to the client’s environment. Evaluate compatibility of information system development efforts with agency architectures and recommends adjustments, as appropriate. Evaluate problems of workflow, organization and planning and develops appropriate corrective action. It is optional to function as a team leader for less experienced systems architects.

Some Linux System Administrator activities and responsibilities.

-Install, configure and update hardware and software.

-Operate and maintain all integrated systems to support mission operations.

-Perform daily application updates and maintenance functions.

-Respond to Tier 3 and Tier 4 trouble tickets.

-Open trouble tickets and respond to trouble calls.

-Respond to management system alerts.

-Deploy monthly security patches and updates.

-Respond to after-hours trouble calls.

-Support annual security requirements.

-Participate as a member of a small, multi-disciplinary team that works cooperatively to ensure supported applications are available to support the customer mission.

-Become familiar with other team responsibilities to enable acting as backup/augmentation as required.

Some Linux System Administrator Qualifications.

-Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience with minimum 4 years of experience.

-The candidate must demonstrate passion for innovation, a sophisticated understanding of technological systems and programming and the ability to further advance Program’s technology.

-The candidate qualified for this position should have previous experience installing operating and maintaining hardware and software that uses the Linux operating system and VMware.

-Experienced working on a modern virtualized network is required.

-Experience working in a classified environment is required.
